Overview

The Department of Environmental Science and Technology (EST) started its academic journey on 10th June, 2009 with 4 teachers and 27 students in the session of 2008-09. The Department of EST was established in 2009 with the code number 02. The Department offered B.Sc. (Hons.), M.S, M. Phill and Ph.D degrees. It is the leading educational Department in its field which brings together multidisciplinary, world class researchers to meet the wide range of challenges in the field of Environmental Science. The Department produces the quality graduates to meet global demands in the field of Environmental Science and Technology. The Department mission is to maintain sustainable livelihood for the people of Bangladesh by ensuring higher standards in environmental sectors.

Dept. of EST has its own Laboratory and garden complex to conduct different subject oriented experiments and research. The Department is already enriched with Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Environmental Microbiology Laboratory.

Students are hired by the Department of Environment, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Agriculture, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI), BARC, and many others development projects. Graduates have opportunities to engage in National and International Environment related research and service centers such like IUCN, UNEP, CARE, WINROCK, Action AID, USAID, SAP Bangladesh, PROSHIKHA, ASA, World Vision, DANIDA, UNDP, SAVE THE CHILDREN, CARITAS International, Industries environmental compliance, EMS, Environmental Auditor to ensure sustainable development and ecofriendly environment.

Vision of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology

The department of Environmental Science and Technology develops the knowledge, talent and leadership to understand and solve the environmental challenges facing the world now and, in the decades, ahead.

Mission of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology

To be a leader in Environmental Science and Technology, developing professionals for regional, national and global competitiveness. Our mission includes the department being a collegial, collaborative and welcoming environment in which to learn and work. As part of its strategic plan, the department aims:

  1. To become a leading centre for the creation and dissemination of Environmental Science and Technological knowledge in Bangladesh.
  2. To play a leading role in sustainable natural resources management and solution to complex environmental problems.
  3. To maximize opportunities for international exchange, for the benefit of both students and our faculties.
  4. To be inclusive, ensuring equality and diversity across all of our activities.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The major aims to provide professional education to train students to be knowledgeable in Environmental Science and Technology so that they can work as environmental professionals contributing to improved environmental performance and sustainability. The program objectives are:

  •  To provide the fundamental knowledge of Environmental Science and Technology to students;
  • To produce graduates to perform competently as environmental professionals and scientists in commercial, industrial and non-governmental organizations, civil services and educational institutions;
  • To produce graduates to aware of global, societal, ethical and professional issues and responsibilities in the practice of Environmental Science and Technology and make contributions to the advancement of the society/country; and
  • To nurture students' ability to engage in life-long learning and professional development.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

The program learning outcomes are grouped into five general areas to identify the nature of the skills and capability involved. These groups are:

Technical (T): Essential capabilities related to traditional scientific and engineering knowledge.

Analysis (A): Creatively working with available data and engineering tools and fundamental knowledge to correctly solve basic problem.

Design (D): Being able to perceive the best solution for both small scale and large scale project by involving all required basic problems.

Ethics, Safety, Society and Environment (ESSE): Giving appropriate consideration to matters pertaining to professionalism and ethics, safety, local and global society and the environment.

Work Skills (WS) – being and effective communicator and effective member of a team and to appreciate the need to continuously acquired skills and abilities.

Upon successful completion of the B. Sc. (Honors) Program of Environmental Science and Technology, the graduates will be able to acquire the following skills and capabilities:
